Mayaguana Island is the third most southerly island in The Bahamas.
Uninhabited until 1812 it is now home to approximately 312 locals and it
remains largely undeveloped and isolated. That's a Bahamian way of saying it's
an ideal getaway for travelers seeking footprint-free beaches, reef diving and
sport fishing.

Additional Information
MAYAGUANA
Mayaguana Island was uninhabited until 1812, when people began to migrate from
the nearby Turks Islands. It's home to approximately 312 locals and the Bahama
hutia, a cross between a rat and a rabbit that was thought to be extinct until
the 1960s.
The three settlements on Mayaguana are Abraham's Bay, Pirate's Well and Betsy
Bay. They are very close-knit communities, each not more than 15 minutes from
the other. Most inhabitants of Mayaguana make a living by fishing and working
as fishing guides, or by farming the fertile soil of the island's woody
terrain. The main form of transportation to Mayaguana is the mailboat, which
transports the mail, and the occasional small group of adventurous travelers,
as well at the three flights per week offered from Nassau on Bahamasair.
Mayaguana is the least developed and most isolated island in The Bahamas.
That's a Bahamian way of saying it's an ideal getaway for travelers seeking
footprint-free beaches, reef diving and sport fishing.
WHAT TO DO:
- Nature lovers will enjoy the fact the island has an ecological
significance, being home to tropical birds lke the West Indian Flamingo and
the Booby. (A type of gannet that breeds on the small cays offshore of the
main island). Other wildlife includes osprey and iguanas. An important venue
for nesting sea turtles, the eastern half of the island is completely
undeveloped. This side of the island is attractive to those extreme hikers
that enjoy the challenge of hiking without developed trails.
- Clear pristine waters that are home to an abundance of marine life, which
include shellfish as well as deep and shallow water sportfish, surround the
island. Our unspoiled reefs that are lively and colorful have and continue to
capture the attention of both avid as well as casual divers.
