ACTIVITIES:

  • GOLF: A superb 18-hole championship golf course designed by Dick Wilson, one of America's most renowned golf course architects, with several classic courses consistently ranked in "Golf Digest's Top 100". The best known probably being the Doral "Blue Monster" in Miami.
The tropically landscaped 186 acre Treasure Cay golf course was the last Dick Wilson planned; he died before it was completed in 1968. His assistant, Joe Lee, completed the course and went on himself to become a famous golf course architect.
At 6'985 yards from the blue tees and with 66 strategically placed sand bunkers, the Treasure Cay course presents a formidable challenge with ocean winds, tight fairways and a layout that makes you ponder every club selection, it will certainly make you want to play it more than once.
The front nine runs parallel to the ocean at the north end of the resort and plays relatively straight forward with two par fives of 555 and 500 yards from the white tees. The back nine is tighter, requiring more precision and thought with slightly more water in play. A couple of duck ponds (with interesting wildlife) represent minor hazards, particularly on number 11, a 515-yard par 5. While handicapped at only 7, many find it the toughest hole with a sharp dogleg right around the pond, numerous trees and the usual thick and gnarly growth off the fairway.
Despite its length the course at Treasure Cay can be played inside three hours. Golf carts are available and the course is generally un-crowded. No tee times are necessary. It can also be walked with a pull cart by those with more time seeking a bit more exercise.
An excellent irrigation system is in place drawing water from two fresh water ponds. The capable and friendly staff under golf director Steve Pedican, do a fantastic job of keeping the course in top condition year round. The resort also works year-round in close conjunction with the head greens keepers of one of the top private South Florida courses. In addition the course has benefited from the enthusiastic support of the gold paying Treasure Cay homeowners.
If you are a single looking for a game, just show up at 8.30am and Pro Ronnie Bootle will assist you in finding a partner. If you tee off after 10.30am you may not see another group - you may be playing your own private championship course! During the winter season, homeowner tournaments are often held at biweekly intervals and guests are most welcome, a reasonable and interesting way of meeting new people. Very attractive golf packages are available. If you are a golfer, or aspire to be one, you won't find many courses in the islands better than the Treasure Cay layout.

  • Excursion to see the wild Abaco Horses: On the sun swept stage of Great ABACO, a threatened herd of rare and endangered horses made their official debut to the world. Work began in 1992 and by August 2002 the horses were designated as a new strain of the critically endangered Spanish Barb breed by the Horse of the America's Registry.
The Abaco Barbs are fighting for their lives as past inappropriate human intervention and drastic changes in habitat took a severe toll on the herd. Once numbering nearly 200, the 13 remaining horses are struggling to survive and face extinction for a second time in their recent turbulent history. These wonderful, though, beautiful horses may be the purest remaining example of a horse introduced to the new world during the Spanish Conquest.
Recognizing their rarity and historical importance, the Government of the Bahamas recently designated a preserve area for the horses. The remaining horses have been returned to this preserve, the ancestral forest home they inhabited for 500 years.
