Affordable Rock Sound - South Eleuthera Cruises
South Eleuthera:
On the south side of Rock Sound (on the way to Northside), stop and see the
famous Ocean Hole. It's an inland saltwater lake that has caves boring under
the Caribbean, some believe as far away as Florida! You can swim in it or feed
the large fish that congregate at dinnertime. TO GET THERE, take a left in the
center of town at the Ocean Hole sign and go about a mile. You will likely see
a vendor there selling colorful shirts and gowns.
If you're headed further south, take your golf clubs to Cotton Bay for a few holes or go to the very tip of the island to see the lighthouse at Eleuthera Point. The settlements of Greencastle, Wymss Bight, Waterford, Deep Creek, the Village, Millars, and Delancey Town are considered drive-through settlements populated by a few dozen people. Bannerman Town is a further settlement in South Eleuthera. Historically large plantations were found here. Much of the labourers needed to tend the fields were auctioned off at the auction house in Bannerman Town, but upon abolishion of the slave trade in 1838 the slaves needed to work the fields left, along with the plantation owners who left to seek their fortunes elsewhere, thus leading to the abandonment of their properties.
